The vase motif originated in 17th-century Safavid Kirman workshops: clusters of palmettes and lotuses emerging from a vase rising from the ground depict a garden of paradise along a vertical axis. Afghan artisans combine this heritage with the faded Sultanabad palette of Ziegler merchants; wool dyed with plant extracts is washed in sunlight and running water to develop an antique patina.
