Soumak is one of Anatolia and the Caucasus’s established weaving techniques, with a history spanning centuries. In this technique, the pattern yarns are individually wrapped around the foundation (warp) yarns, creating a dense, characteristically textured surface that differs from knotted rugs. The wrapping method leaves the back of the rug just as neat and clean as the front, making Soumak weaving durable and distinctive. The horizontal, striped, basket-like appearance of the surface also comes from this special technique. In the Paglia Series, the Soumak technique is combined with a dense wool texture reaching an 8 mm pile height, offering both a natural, understated aesthetic and a soft, sturdy foundation.
