Soumak is one of the deeply rooted weaving techniques of Anatolia and the Caucasus, with a history spanning centuries. In this technique, pattern yarns are individually wrapped around the foundation (warp) yarns and interwoven, creating a dense, distinctive textured surface unlike that of knotted rugs. The wrapping method leaves the back of the rug as neat and clean as the front, making Soumak weaving durable and unique. The horizontal, basket-like appearance on the surface also comes from this special technique. In the Paglia Series, the Soumak technique is combined with a dense wool weave reaching an 8 mm thickness, offering both a natural, understated aesthetic and a soft, durable foundation.
