The Story of This Rug

The Shah Abbas pattern is named after the Safavid ruler Abbas I; it is a large palmette, rosette, and arabesque composition matured in 17th-century Isfahan workshops. Ziegler & Co. re-wove this pattern in the 19th century in Sultanabad according to Western living room dimensions. Afghan artisans today continue the same spirit with Ghazni wool and natural dye knowledge; natural washing gives the rug an antique softness.

Why a Single-Piece Handwoven Afghan Rug

  1. Uniqueness: There is only one of this rug; the same knot rhythm and dye batch cannot be repeated.
  2. Durability of natural dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline, root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
  3. Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool from high-altitude sheep with high lanolin content; provides natural stain resistance and silky shine.
  4. Asymmetric Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges compared to Turkish (Gördes) knots.
  5. Investment value: Genuine naturally dyed Afghan rugs gain value through generations of use.

Color and Pattern

Large Shah Abbas palmettes in mold green, navy, mustard, and ivory tones on a root red ground; lotus rosettes, coiled branches, and leaf clusters in between. The border features a palmette chain on a cream ground; the inner guard has a narrow rosette and leaf stripe.

Care Recommendations

  • Clean with a brushless vacuum head on low speed.
  • Blot stains immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
  • Rotate 180° every 6 months to distribute sun and traffic wear evenly.
  • Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with natural dyes.

This rug is the sway of an Isfahan palmette in a root red sky; it brings a true Persian summer evening to your living room.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of handwoven and natural fiber Carpetdocia pieces that add value to your living space for generations.

Immediate Action and Liquid Contact
Timing is the most critical factor in case of possible liquid spills. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth to gently blot the liquid from the surface without rubbing. Always perform this action in the direction of the carpet’s nap (the natural direction of the fibers). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers like TENCEL™ and viscose. Stop the intervention immediately if you have any doubts.

Routine Care and Light Balance
Always prefer vacuum cleaners with low suction power in your weekly cleaning routine. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural fibers to light and prevent regional tone differences (fading), we recommend changing the orientation of your carpet every 2 to 6 months.

Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the silky shine and structural integrity of the carpet. For deep cleansing, support should be sought only from professional carpet care centers specialized in natural fibers.

Washing Instructions
Delicate pieces in the Carpetdocia collections are not suitable for machine washing due to their structure. (Only specific models clearly labeled "Washable" in their name can be washed in household machines on a low heat and delicate cycle.)
