The Shah Abbas design takes its name from the Safavid ruler Abbas I; it is a classic composition combining large palmettes, rosettes, and arabesque vines developed in the palace workshops of Isfahan. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. adapted this design in Sultanabad to suit the dimensions and color palette of Western salons. Afghan artisans today weave the same spirit anew using their own Ghazni wool and knowledge of natural dyes; the natural washing process gives the composition its soft, patinated character.
