The Story of This Rug
The Shah Abbas design originated in the large-palmette garden compositions of 17th-century Safavid court workshops, where large floral rosettes are connected by winding branches. Afghan artisans adapt this heritage to contemporary interiors by placing the classical composition on a softly faded gray ground. The wool is treated with natural mordants, dyed repeatedly with root dyes, and given its softly faded tone through natural washing.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: Only one of this rug exists; the same knot rhythm and dye batch can never be replicated.
- Natural dye durability: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep, providing natural stain resistance and a silky luster.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine naturally dyed Afghan rugs gain value through generations of use.
Color and Pattern
Large, symmetrically arranged Shah Abbas palmettes and star rosettes stand out against the gray ground; small clusters of flowers and leaves in indigo blue, pomegranate green, orange, and ivory enliven the field. A narrow border with a gray-purple ground, fine botanical tracery, and a row of palmettes frames the composition.
Care Recommendations
- Clean with a vacuum on a low setting using a brushless vacuum head.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every 6 months so sunlight and foot traffic are distributed evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with natural dyes.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia's handwoven and natural-fiber pieces, which add value to your living space, for generations to come.
Immediate Action and Contact with Liquids
When liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, remove the liquid from the surface by gently blotting only, never rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug's pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If you are unsure, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuum cleaners and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural yarns to light and prevent localized tonal differences (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.
The Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. Such products can irreversibly damage the rug's silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
