Afghan Chobi Ziegler Rug · All-Over Palmette and Boteh Composition, One-of-a-Kind Piece on a Gray-Blue Ground
A one-of-a-kind Chobi Ziegler rug, woven with an asymmetrical Persian knot in workshops in northern Afghanistan and built around the all-over rhythm of palmette and boteh motifs. Botanical patterns in terracotta, pomegranate, and indigo tones across a glacial ground that shifts toward gray-blue give the rug a faded, noble patina.

The Story Behind This Rug
The boteh motif is associated in Central Asia with a tulip bud or cypress tree; in Persian rug tradition, it symbolizes abundance and eternity. In the large-scale rugs commissioned by Ziegler & Co. in Sultanabad in the 19th century, palmettes and boteh motifs came together in a large, open composition. Afghan artisans carry on this heritage with their knowledge of natural dyes; the wool is treated with alum and iron mordants, dyed repeatedly with plant extracts, then softened by washing in the sun and running water.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: There is only one of this rug; its knotting rhythm and dye batch can never be repeated.
- Durability of natural dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, natural root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-staple, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep provides natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine naturally dyed Afghan rugs gain value through generations of use.
Color and Pattern
Large, symmetrically arranged palmette rosettes and bold boteh (paisley) motifs on either side stand out against a glacial gray-blue ground; between them are stylized lotus flowers, clusters of leaves, and curling branches. A terracotta-red border frames the design, along with palmette patterns on a cream ground and corner rosettes.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
